Leaving Hong Kong Island

Welcome to Sok Kwu Wan 索罟湾, Lamma Island

Lamma Island is located to the southwest of Hong Kong Island with an area of 13.55 km².   The northern village is called Yung Shue Wan and the eastern village is called Sok Kwu Wan.   Few people live on the southern part of Lamma.  Lamma has an estimated population of only 6,000.

We Landed at Sok Kwu Wan Ferry Terminal

Mount Stenhouse is the tallest mountain in Lamma (353 meters above sea-level), situated between Sok Kwu Wan and Sham Wan.  Unusually shaped rocks can be found all over this mountain, but a grueling hike is necessary to access these.

Actor Chow Yun-fat grew up on the island in the village of Tung Oin Yung Shue Wan.  His family still operates a seafood/pigeon restaurant called “Shau Kee” in the main village.

The big street of Sok Kwu Wan consists mainly of seafood restaurants.  Sok Kwu Wan has the largest fish farming site in Hong Kong.

We decided to walk from the east of the island upwards, so that we could stop off at some strategic points along the way, and finish up in the main village of Yung Shue Wan for tofu-fa.

The Sok Kwu Wan’s Tin Hau Temple is Just Few minutes walk from the village

Tourists can Barbecue and Fishing at Lo Shing Beach which is 10 minutes’ Walk from the Village.

We saw several ‘caves’ on the trail near Sok Kwu Wan, labelled on tourist signs as ‘kamikaze grotto’.  These are caves reputed to have been dug out by the Japanese during the war, according to legend, to hide their kamikaze boats, but more likely to store munitions.

The trail between Yung Shue Wan and Sok Kwu Wan, surrounded by grassland, offers a picturesque walk.  From there, one can see the coastline of the island.  It takes roughly 2 hour to walk through the trail.

Here, there is another little gem – the organic vegetable farm (a very rare find in Hong Kong).

Kin Hing Tofu Dessert 建興亞婆豆腐花 is a must-eat and this small down-to-earth stall has been widely featured in different media, which is also widely known as “Old Lady Tofu Fa”.

Not sure if the old lady who served us was indeed the founder?  The old lady looks to be in her 70-80’s, but still operating in very high efficiency! A full bowl of Tofu dessert (hot or cold HK$9) was served soon with just a few swings of the old lady’s hands.

We reached Hung Shing Yeh Beach about 2 hour later, and were so amazed by its beautiful beach.

Laid-back and Relaxing Lifestyle at Yung Shue Wan

Actually, we didn’t know Lamma Island is for hiking, but this is a very good experience.  We explore around Yung Shue Wan to take a couple more photos, then at about 5.45 pm, having arrived on Lamma around 2 pm, we took the ferry back to Hong Kong Central.

Sunset at Yung Shue Wan

Lamma Island is a wonderful place to escape busy central Hong Kong and to get a completely different lifestyle feel of the territory.  The ferries to reach the island are extremely cheap, then the panoramic nature scenery and hiking is free!

The famous Ladies’ Street 女人街 is located at Tung Choi Street on the east of Nathan Road.  This market specializes in women’s clothing, accessories, cosmetics, and the like, is one of the most well-known street markets in Hong Kong.
